Kipkemoi Henke's practice begins with a question he has carried most of his life: Where is home? Raised between Germany, Kenya, and the United States, home has never felt like a fixed place. It has revealed itself through feelings of belonging — and painting has become his way of exploring and holding those moments.

He does not paint stories. He paints emotion. His subjects are shown in moments of joy, play, tenderness, and reflection. By removing narrative context and working in monochromatic palettes, he directs attention entirely to expression — inviting the viewer to meet the subject without a sense of separation. The monochromatic approach carries the sentimentality of black and white photography, creating emotional vulnerability and a timelessness that resists specific place or era.

His work is Afrofuturistic — not as fantasy, but as intention. He imagines a future in which Black people exist outside of stories of oppression or resistance, where they are simply free. His portraits of Kenyan people are a bridge: a deliberate act of reconnection between Africa and the diaspora, built on the recognition of shared emotion rather than catalogued difference. For a brief moment, his paintings create a shared emotional state between the subject in Africa and the viewer in America. That reconnection is the work.
