Jasmine Thomas-Girvan's practice is rooted in the subsumed histories of the Caribbean. Working across sculpture and installation, she investigates alternative narratives by delving into indigenous, diasporic, and marginalized heritages — building work that springs materially from the Caribbean environment itself. Palm fronds, calabash, coconut shells, wood, and earth. These are not decorative choices. They are ingredients that vibrate at a Caribbean frequency, reflecting reality both materially and spiritually.

Trained as a metalsmith within Eurocentric systems, Thomas-Girvan recognized early the limitations of that frame — how its methods silence voices at the margins of power. That recognition became the engine of her practice. She calls her methodology inverse archaeology: not excavating the past through established Western systems, but building outward from indigenous knowledge and technologies as pathways to psychic and physical well-being.

Her sculptures and installations function as artefacts, repositories, and ciphers for the unique histories of the Americas. They are triggers of experience rather than objects — sites of reflection that prompt the viewer to think, re-evaluate, grow, and ultimately act. Thomas-Girvan's work is a tool for healing, transformation, and liberation. It asks viewers to enter into relationship with ancient futures and the approaching past, and to search beyond accepted narratives for what has been obscured.
